Tom Keys-Toyer, a father from Bristol, is nearing the completion of a 630-mile (1,014km) trek along the South West Coastal Path, undertaken in memory of his son. He described the journey as “a physical and emotional challenge.” Having commenced his expedition from Minehead on November 2, Mr. Keys-Toyer is scheduled to conclude his run in Poole, Dorset, this Saturday. This endeavor serves as a fundraising effort for Boys in Mind, a mental health charity based in Bath, following the death of his 17-year-old son, Sam, who took his own life in 2020. The 51-year-old has successfully raised over £44,000 to date, stating, “The support I’ve received has been overwhelming.” Mr. Keys-Toyer shared, “Knowing that am dedicating this run to my middle son Sam spurs me on every step and the fact I’m raising awareness and funds for Boys in Mind, a cause so close to mine and my family’s heart, keeps me going.” He further expressed his hope that “this challenge has raised the much-needed awareness that it is OK for boys and young men to be vulnerable, to talk and share their worries and that it is so important for them to look after their minds.” He added, “I hope that this challenge encourages boys and young lads to open up.” For individuals impacted by this narrative, the BBC Action Line web page provides a compilation of organizations offering support and advice.
