Shootings in northern France have resulted in the deaths of five individuals, with one incident occurring close to a migrant camp. A 22-year-old male suspect has surrendered to law enforcement, as reported by French media outlets. Charlotte Huet, Dunkirk’s chief prosecutor, stated that four individuals were fatally shot in Loon-Plage, a coastal area near Dunkirk. These victims included two security guards and two men residing in the nearby camp. This information was conveyed in a statement and reported by French media. The prosecutor further disclosed that the assailant admitted to an earlier shooting incident in Wormhout, a neighboring town. Patrice Vergriete, the Mayor of Dunkirk, commented that the reason for the assaults “remains unknown”. According to the prosecutor’s statement, multiple firearms were discovered in the suspect’s vehicle, and he had no prior record with the police. Reports indicate that all five homicides occurred within a span of under two hours across the Dunkirk region. The prosecutor detailed that a 29-year-old man was fatally shot with “several gunshots” at 15:15 local time (14:15 GMT) outside his residence in Wormhout, a village situated directly south of the city. Approximately 45 minutes subsequent to this, two security guards, aged 33 and 37, were killed close to a port in Loon-Plage, located west of Dunkirk, as further stated by Huet. A few minutes thereafter, two additional men, aged 19 and 30, also died from gunshot wounds. These individuals were residing in the adjacent migrant camp, according to the prosecutor. BBC News has reached out to local authorities to obtain a statement. Mayor Vergriete characterized the event as a “tragedy,” asserting that “an individual coldly murdered several people” within the vicinity. Xavier Bertrand, who leads the regional assembly, verified via X that five individuals had perished in a “tragic event.” French media outlets documented a substantial deployment of emergency services near a migrant camp, although it remains uncertain whether the shooting incidents occurred within a settlement itself. Loon-Plage contains multiple temporary settlements that accommodate migrants. This location is situated close to Calais and the Strait of Dover, which represents the Channel’s narrowest section. Comparable camps along the northern French coastline have been utilized by individuals seeking to cross to the UK using small boats. Copyright 2024 BBC. All rights reserved.
