A shooting incident at a private Christian school in the US state of Wisconsin resulted in the deaths of a teacher and a teenage student, alongside injuries to six individuals. Madison Police Chief Shon Barnes identified the assailant on Monday night as a 15-year-old female student from the school. Officials reported that the attacker was present at Abundant Life Christian School before commencing the gunfire and was subsequently discovered deceased at the location. Six students sustained injuries, with two of them experiencing life-threatening conditions. Mr. Barnes reported that the initial active shooter alert was made by a second-grade student, aged seven or eight. Mr. Barnes stated, “Today is a sad day not only for Madison, for our entire country.” He further remarked, “We have to do a better job in our community.” He also noted that law enforcement had not yet determined a motive for the shooting, and the suspect’s family was assisting with the inquiry. Although he acknowledged reports of a manifesto, he indicated that its authenticity had not been confirmed. The method by which the assailant obtained a firearm remains unknown. Chief Barnes identified the suspected attacker as Natalie Rupnow, also known as Samantha. It is thought that she died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The Dane County Medical Examiner will issue the official cause of death following autopsy results. Mr. Barnes stated that, based on his current information, police had no previous encounters with the individual identified as the shooter. Law enforcement officers responded to a 911 emergency call reporting a shooter at the Christian school on Monday, approximately at 11:00 local time (17:00 GMT). Chief Barnes confirmed that the attacker had been present at school before the incident. The gunfire was restricted to a study hall containing students of various grade levels. Barbara Wiers, the school’s director of relations, mentioned that the school had conducted active shooter training earlier in the year, making the information “very fresh” for educators to apply on Monday. She explained that while the school lacks a dedicated police officer, or school resource officer, all classroom doors lock automatically, and campus access requires visitors to be buzzed in via the main entrance. Ms. Wiers, who was teaching during the assault, praised the students for handling themselves “brilliantly.” She observed, “They were clearly scared.” She added, “When they heard ‘lockdown, lockdown’ and nothing else, they knew it was real.” Upon their arrival at the school, police reported finding the shooter deceased, alongside a handgun. No law enforcement officers discharged their weapons. The names of the victims have not been released by the police. Mr. Barnes stated that two students were in critical condition with life-threatening injuries. Four additional individuals were transported to the hospital, with two subsequently discharged. Authorities have requested that witnesses who observed or heard the attack contact the police. Mr. Barnes commented, “But that’s not something we want to rush. We’re not gonna interrogate students.” He further remarked that “every child, every person in that building is a victim and will be a victim forever.” Abundant Life Christian School enrolls approximately 400 students, spanning from kindergarten to high school. The school posted on Facebook, stating, “Please pray for our Challenger Family.” This message rapidly garnered hundreds of supportive comments from individuals nationwide. The school remains shut as the police investigation proceeds. Mr. Barnes remarked, “This has been a rough day for our city.” He continued, “This is going to be a day that will be etched in the collective minds and memories of all those from Madison.” Wisconsin Governor Tony Evers expressed his prayers for all affected and mandated that flags on state buildings be flown at half-mast. President Joe Biden issued a statement describing the shooting as “shocking and unconscionable.” Biden stated, “Students across our country should be learning how to read and write – not having to learn how to duck and cover,” and urged Congress to promptly enact legislation to prevent further gun violence. Incidents of shootings are frequent in the United States, with schools also experiencing them. The K-12 Violence Project, a non-profit dedicated to violence reduction through research, has documented over 300 shootings in 2024. This count encompasses instances where a firearm is displayed or discharged, or a bullet strikes school property, irrespective of the victim count. As reported by the news organization EducationWeek, 38 school shootings nationwide this year had resulted in fatalities or injuries. Prior to this shooting, there had been 69 victims in total, including 16 deaths. Nevertheless, mass shootings perpetrated by females are considerably less frequent. School shootings carried out by female assailants are even rarer. David Riedman, founder of the K-12 School Shooting Database, noted in a blog post last year that most school shooters are males in their teenage years or early twenties. However, at least four planned school shootings by female attackers have been recorded since 1979.
