One person has died and a section of the M6 motorway in Lancashire has been closed following an incident where a lorry overturned, struck the central reservation, and landed on the opposite carriageway, colliding with the rear of a car. The motorway was subsequently shut in both directions between Junction 33 near Lancaster and Junction 32 near Preston. The crash occurred at approximately 11:20 GMT. Police reported that several other individuals sustained serious injuries, and emergency services, including an air ambulance, were present at the scene. National Highways indicated that significant delays were occurring on both the northbound and southbound carriageways, with the road expected to remain closed for several hours. A spokesperson for Lancashire Police explained that the lorry, which was traveling northbound, crossed onto the southbound carriageway and struck a number of other vehicles. The spokesperson added: “Very sadly the collision has resulted in one fatality and a number of other serious injuries.” They continued: “Our thoughts are with all those affected at this time.” The police also stated: “Emergency services remain at the scene and the motorway remains closed in both directions between junctions 32 and 33 while we continue to deal with the incident. “The closure is likely to stay in place for some considerable time so please check before you travel as diversions are in place.” Fans planning to travel to Preston for tonight’s Championship football match between Preston North End and Sunderland have been advised by both clubs about potential traffic delays.
