Authorities have reported that at least five individuals have died and four sustained injuries following explosions that occurred in an apartment building in The Hague, Netherlands. Emergency services, specifically firefighters, were dispatched to the three-story structure after the blasts, which led to the collapse of multiple residences in the Tarwekamp district on Saturday at approximately 06:15 local time (05:15 GMT). Jan van Zanen, the city’s mayor, stated that the number of people still missing remains undetermined. While the exact cause of the explosions has not yet been established, Dutch police indicated that a vehicle departed the scene “at very high speed” soon after the incident and have requested public assistance for witnesses. Mayor Van Zanen expressed that the likelihood of finding survivors within the debris was low, advising the community to brace for a “worst case scenario”. Previous estimations suggested that as many as 20 individuals might have been present in the apartments when the explosion occurred, but the mayor declined to comment further on this figure. The Dutch fire service confirmed that five fatalities have been recorded. According to reports from Dutch media outlets, five apartments were obliterated by the explosion. Search and rescue teams, accompanied by sniffer dogs, have been dispatched to search through the wreckage; however, certain sections of the location are still deemed unsafe for entry. A substantial excavator has been introduced to facilitate the removal of rubble, and illumination has been set up at the scene. Adam Muller, aged fourteen, conveyed to the AFP news agency that the explosion “felt like an earthquake”. “I was asleep and suddenly there was this huge bang,” he stated. He further added, “I looked out of the window and just saw flames. It’s a massive shock.” Janny Knol, the national police commissioner for the Netherlands, observed that the community was experiencing “disbelief and uncertainty”. In a formal statement, Dutch King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima expressed: “We sympathise with all those who have been personally affected or who fear for the fate of their loved ones.” Copyright 2024 BBC.
