A fire that erupted at a care home near Zaragoza in north-eastern Spain has resulted in the deaths of at least 10 individuals and injuries to others, according to emergency services. The blaze ignited in the town of Villafranca de Ebro during the early hours of Friday, with local authorities reporting that 82 residents were present in the facility when the incident occurred. Local reports indicate that the facility, which commenced operations 16 years prior as a retirement home, has subsequently focused on providing care for individuals experiencing dementia and mental health issues. Emergency responders received notification around 05:00 (04:00 GMT) on Friday, and fire crews successfully extinguished the flames. The specific ages of the deceased have not yet been determined. The mayor of Villafranca de Ebro informed Spanish radio that two additional individuals were transported to a hospital, with one person’s state of health being characterized as critical. Volga Ramírez conveyed to Cadena Ser the possibility that a burning mattress in one of the rooms might have triggered the tragic event. According to witnesses, the single-storey structure sustained minimal fire damage, and a significant number of deaths are attributed to smoke inhalation. The mayor recounted to reporters, “My husband went in to get people out. You couldn’t even breathe because of the smoke.” Fernando Beltrán, the Spanish government’s delegate for the Aragón region, extended his sympathies to the victims and stated that monitoring the recovery of hospitalized individuals and the inquiry into the fire’s origin would persist. Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez similarly voiced his profound dismay and shock regarding the catastrophe. A separate deadly fire in the Zaragoza area nine years prior resulted in the deaths of nine individuals at a different retirement facility.
