Richard Jones, a pumpkin farmer operating Llynclys Hall Farm near Oswestry, Shropshire, typically anticipates the end of October as a peak period. However, this year, he encountered considerable challenges leading up to Halloween. He attributed the difficulties to adverse weather, stating, “The weather has never really played ball with us. The sun has not shone enough, and pumpkins like a lot of sunshine and don’t really need a lot of water.” Mr. Jones further remarked that this season represented “In 25 years of growing pumpkins, this has been the most challenging one by a long chalk.” According to Mr. Jones, pumpkins constitute the farm’s primary business, making a successful harvest “vital.” Farmers in various regions of the country have reported similar experiences. Although Britain recorded approximately average rainfall nationally during the summer, its distribution was inconsistent, with arid conditions in the south and east contrasting with wetter-than-average conditions in the north and west. The inherent unpredictability of agricultural endeavors has prompted Mr. Jones to diversify his operations. In addition to the farm shop established by him and his wife Lynda upon assuming control of the family business in 1995, the farm now hosts fun fairs and craft markets, and leases its parking facility for weekly gatherings of car enthusiasts. Speaking to BBC Radio Shropshire, he stated, “Obviously the car park is quite important for the pumpkins, as we need to have hard-standing for the public to come. “Since it was sitting there doing very little for the rest of the year, we thought it was important to try and get some extra revenue.” He further commented that farmers are fundamentally business owners, adding, “Nowadays, farmers need to generate money from things from things other than just your ordinary type of farming, and I think a lot of farmers are rising to that challenge.” For updates from BBC Shropshire, listeners can access BBC Sounds, Facebook, X, and Instagram.
