Fara Williams expressed surprise regarding Alan Shearer’s remarks concerning Newcastle’s attitude, stating that from an external perspective, she perceives no such problem. According to Williams, the club’s difficulties originate from defensive inconsistency. She noted that in recent seasons, Newcastle maintained a highly stable back five, a situation that no longer exists, resulting in a higher number of goals conceded than typically observed. Williams suggested that the lack of experience and leadership within the defensive line likely contributes to this issue, especially given that Kieran Trippier is currently unavailable, Sven Botman remains a significant absence, and both Tino Livramento, considered a future prospect, and Lewis Hall are in their early 20s. Williams reiterated her stance, asserting that she would not challenge Newcastle’s attitude. She emphasized that the club’s and individual players’ fundamental principle is hard work. The team exhibits strong unity and demonstrated their fighting spirit during the 3-3 draw against Liverpool. Newcastle, Williams observed, suffers from a lack of squad depth, with many core players now in their third consecutive season of consistent game time. She posited that this factor inherently presents challenges and can lead to burnout. Williams recalled Newcastle’s experience last season, when they attempted to compete in the Champions League with a limited squad. However, she highlighted that the team would not have qualified for that competition without the appropriate attitude. Williams concluded that individual players do not lose their diligent work ethic; instead, their current struggles this season are more likely attributable to mental burnout and fatigue, alongside their inconsistent defense. Fara Williams conveyed these observations during an interview with BBC Sport’s Katie Stafford.
