The relatives of a 77-year-old man, who was fatally stabbed at a historic market in south London, have characterized him as “warm, kind and generous”. Hilkiah McLeggan, a resident of Southwark, passed away at the location following an assault on East Street in Walworth on Sunday morning. His family, who knew him as Mac or LLoyd, also stated that he “would do anything for his friends and family”. Musse Ali, 66, who has no fixed address, presented himself at Croydon Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday, facing one count of murder and two counts of attempted murder. Two additional men are still hospitalized, with one reported to be in a critical condition. In a statement released through the Met Police, his family further commented: “He was a hard-working man who worked on past his retirement because he knew he could offer more of himself and enjoyed being amongst his colleagues who were also his friends.” They continued: “He was a great support to so many and would offer his help without hesitation to support their needs. His family and friends are devastated and are struggling to make sense of this terrible event.” The family conveyed gratitude to everyone who offered condolences, apprehended the suspect, or assisted Mr McLeggan, specifically mentioning “those that prayed for him in his final moments”. The Met Police indicated that the family also requested privacy as they cope with such a tragic, senseless, and devastating loss. Following the incident, members of the community have established a memorial at East Street Market. Mr Ali is scheduled to appear next at the Old Bailey for a plea hearing on 10 December.
