The relatives of a motorist who sustained severe injuries in a collision on a motorway have issued a plea for any uncontacted witnesses to get in touch with law enforcement. Carl Tompkins, aged 30, a resident of Tadley, Hampshire, was involved in an incident where his vehicle struck a tree adjacent to the M3 motorway close to Basingstoke around 22:20 BST on Friday, October 4. According to police, he is still receiving medical care in hospital. As part of a police appeal, the family indicated that drivers who witnessed the collision and individuals present on motorway overpasses might not have reported their observations yet. Law enforcement officials stated that two individuals, previously apprehended on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving, are still subject to an ongoing investigation. The motorway experienced a closure exceeding eight hours subsequent to the northbound accident that occurred between junction 6, serving Basingstoke, and junction 5, for Hook. Mr. Tompkins, operating a silver Honda Civic, was transported by air ambulance to a medical facility. His family expressed: “Thank you to those who stopped to help Carl, especially the paramedics and the air ambulance who gave him the best chance.” They further stated: “Thank you also to Southampton Hospital Neurological Intensive Care and Basingstoke Hospital Intensive Care for the amazing care that you have given to Carl.” The family added: “We also want to thank all those who have already spoken to the police, but we know there may be people with further information who haven’t come forward and we would urge them to do so.” Authorities indicated their belief that numerous drivers who paused at the accident site subsequently departed without providing their contact information. The individuals who had been arrested – a 33-year-old residing in Basingstoke and a 34-year-old from St Mary Bourne – were subsequently released as the police investigation proceeds.
