The family of a Belfast man, absent in Spain for five days, has expressed profound concern, according to his sister. John Hardy last communicated with his family on 14 December, following his drive from Alicante to Benidorm. Courtney George, his sister, conveyed to BBC News NI their urgent desire for his return, stating they “need him home ASAP”. The Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) is maintaining communication with the family. Ms. George articulated her wish for her brother to “just to find someone and contact home”. She further stated, “We are distracted, he never has [gone] this long without contacting anyone ever.” Mr. Hardy, a father of two sons, traveled to Spain two weeks prior. His scheduled return flight was set for 18 December. Ms. George remarked, “If he had lost his phone, I am sure he could ask a randomer for help through Facebook or something.” She also mentioned that a woman performing in Benidorm bars reportedly saw him on Tuesday. In an official statement, the PSNI confirmed they had “received a report regarding a man who is currently holidaying in Spain and who has not been in touch with family in recent days”. The statement further noted, “Officers are liaising with the family.” A spokesperson for the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office also stated: “We are supporting the family of a British man reported missing in Spain and are in contact with the local authorities.” BBC News NI has reached out to Spanish police for their comments.
