A family who were among the initial recipients of an Elizabeth Emblem described the experience as “emotional, amazing and unforgettable.” This accolade is bestowed upon public servants, such as police officers and firefighters, who died while performing their duties. Fleur Lombard was only 21 years old when she perished in 1996 while combating a fire at a supermarket in Bristol. Her sister, Rebecca Lombard-Earl, from Darlington, informed BBC Radio Tees that the ceremony held at Windsor Castle was “really emotional,” noting that tears were shed by several of the assembled families. Ms Lombard, an employee of Avon Fire and Rescue, held the distinction of being the first female firefighter to die while on duty during peacetime in Britain. Ms Lombard-Earl was present at the award ceremony accompanied by her 17-year-old son, Rowan. She stated, “He’s always been keen to know about my sister, his auntie, who he never got to meet.” She mentioned that the proceedings were less formal than her expectations. Ms Lombard-Earl recounted how King Charles engaged in conversation with each of the over 30 families present. According to her, he offered an apology for the time taken to establish the award, conveyed his condolences, and extended his regards along with a “happy Christmas” to her parents. Ms Lombard-Earl remarked, “It was just a really beautiful moment, and something so special.” Ms Lombard-Earl indicated her belief that her sister would have considered the ceremony to be a “fuss.” She added, “She was very humble.” However, she further stated that Fleur would be “thrilled about what it means for her immediate family, what it means for her colleagues in the fire service, and what it means for every family that is now able to receive this award.” Ms Lombard-Earl mentioned that the award would be placed in a display cabinet. She commented, “We’re allowed to wear it every day if we wish, but I think I’ll be worried about losing it.” Post navigation Farmers Protest Inheritance Tax Reforms in London, Citing Government “Betrayal” Georgian Police Confront Protesters Over Disputed Election Outcome
