A national park has provided an early viewing opportunity for its new visitor centre, situated within a historic building described as having a “fascinating history”. Members of the public gained access to the recently established Exmoor National Park centre, located at Exmoor House in Dulverton, during the Dulverton By Starlight Christmas event. This structure previously functioned as a workhouse before undergoing conversion in the early 20th Century. Dan James, representing the national park, stated that relocating from its former premises off Fore Street, while a “difficult decision,” resulted in “significant savings.” The Exmoor National Park authority collaborates with the community, local councils, businesses, and various other organizations to manage the national park. All three Exmoor National Park centres, situated in Dulverton, Dunster, and Lynmouth, have received South West Tourism Awards and provide guidance, along with displays and exhibits designed to “bring the story of Exmoor to life.” “We are really pleased with how well the transition has gone,” Mr James commented. He further explained, “It was a difficult decision to relocate our award-winning centre, but, with core funding being reduced by over 50% in real terms, we had to find significant savings.” “We’re excited to offer people the opportunity to see behind the doors at Exmoor House.” Mr James noted that Exmoor House possesses a “fascinating history.” “It started life as a workhouse, and people are always keen to see behind the big green door,” he elaborated. The Dulverton National Park Centre is scheduled for its official reopening in spring 2025. Copyright 2024 BBC. All rights reserved. The BBC bears no responsibility for the content of external sites.
