An event was organized for 200 individuals who might experience feelings of loneliness, vulnerability, or isolation during the Christmas period. The Coventry Building Society Arena, which serves as the home ground for Coventry City Football Club, functioned as one of eight locations throughout the UK participating in the “One Day at Christmas” initiative. Attendees enjoyed a Christmas dinner and received live entertainment featuring X Factor finalist Charlie Healy, alongside opportunities for dancing and games. Participating organizations, such as Sky Blues in the Community, Saheli Group, and Age UK, have additionally implemented various programs throughout the city and its neighboring regions for individuals experiencing isolation. Dave Busst, representing Sky Blues in the Community, the charitable division of the city’s football club, stated: “What we want to do is highlight the awareness around isolation, if we can reach out to somebody at this particular time, because not everyone has friends, family, people they can call on.” He added: “You’ll get like-minded other people.” Busst further commented: “Sometimes, whether it’s bereavement, or they’ve lost someone recently – usually if it’s around Christmas it brings back memories.” He concluded: “Not everyone wants to talk but they just like being around that sort of atmosphere of people enjoying themselves.” Raymond Constable, a 75-year-old resident of Ryton-on-Dunsmore, experienced the loss of his wife of 46 years to cancer in 2016. The retired forklift truck driver, who has participated in social groups, remarked: “I was at home, alone, down and isolated. “I needed something as I felt like I had nothing left in my life, but now I have.” He indicated that the social groups had “snowballed into a group of new friends”. Paul Michael, the managing director of the arena, stated: “Christmas is a special time, but it can also be a difficult time for many people. We hope that this event can make a difference.” For further updates, follow BBC Coventry & Warwickshire on BBC Sounds, Facebook, X, and Instagram. Copyright 2024 BBC. All rights reserved.
