A police officer currently serving has denied charges of assaulting a man with mental health issues while on duty. Glen Calvert, an officer with Essex Police, is accused of attacking the man on May 19 in West Mersea, specifically while placing him into a police vehicle. During a preliminary hearing held at Chelmsford Magistrates’ Court, it was stated that the 53-year-old constable had been responding to a call regarding concerns for an individual’s welfare at the time of the alleged incident. Mr. Calvert, whose address is Ipswich Road, Colchester, has denied the charge of assault by beating. His trial is scheduled to commence at Colchester Magistrates’ Court on April 11, 2025. The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) initiated an investigation into the matter following its report. Furthermore, Mr. Calvert faces an additional accusation of assaulting the same individual a second time, specifically during the process of removing him from the police van. Essex Police has confirmed that the officer has since been assigned to restricted duties.
