A proposal for three pre-fabricated residences on a former builder’s storage yard in Epsom has drawn objections from local residents. Neighbors assert that the area has reached its “bursting point.” Those living on Fairview Road, adjacent to the proposed development, contend that the existing road infrastructure is insufficient to handle an expected 50% rise in traffic volume. The Epsom and Ewell Borough Council has approved this initiative, which seeks to reduce reliance on costly nightly hotel stays for families experiencing homelessness. Councillor Steven McCormick stated: “The approved accommodation will strengthen local communities by enabling local families at risk of homelessness to stay within the borough.” Council members determined that the substantial advantages of offering housing to families requiring assistance within the borough superseded any potential drawbacks. Furthermore, the council’s report concluded that the project would not lead to increased traffic, generate highway safety concerns, or disrupt the current road network’s functionality. These modular homes, described as resembling storage containers, are intended to provide temporary housing within the borough for families on the housing register. However, residents argue that the council has sanctioned an “unsafe” undertaking that, while cost-effective for the council, negatively impacts local inhabitants. Debbie Ransome, a resident of Fairview Road, commented: “We’re at bursting point.” Fairview Road serves as one of three access points to Glyn School, with hundreds of students traversing it daily on foot. Ms. Ransome reported that she occasionally finds herself needing to act as a “lollipop lady,” stepping into the street to guide children safely past vehicles. Jo Garrod, the headteacher of Glyn School, informed the Local Democracy Reporting Service: “There’s no explanation how it’s going to be safe.” Mr. McCormick further stated: “The local families who will be housed in the temporary modular buildings are likely to feel more secure at Fairview Road than in alternative temporary accommodation out of the borough. “The approved scheme will help reduce the upheaval families feel.” Post navigation Swindon Town Centre Reinvention Plans to be Discussed Initial Plans Revealed for Large-Scale Residential Development in Benfleet
