A hospital has stated that its newly enhanced neonatal unit is expected to improve the experiences of both infants and their parents. Sunderland Royal Hospital invested £1m, sourced from charitable donations, to renovate its neonatal unit and establish new lodging facilities for parents to remain with their children. The unit was inaugurated by Sunderland AFC player Luke O’Nien, whose two children were born at the same hospital. O’Nien commented that the hospital team provided families with a “really good start to life.” While visiting, he encountered new parents Terri and Dalton Hodgen, whose son Jax arrived prematurely. O’Nien remarked, “Seeing him smile, seeing the baby happy and healthy is the most important thing and it’s down to these guys [in the unit] and the wonderful service they provide here – how homely they’ve made it.” Mr. Hodgen described the care delivered at the unit as impressive. He stated, “You couldn’t ask for anything more.” He added, “We’re going home on a night and through an app we’re having pictures sent of when he’s being fed, when he’s waking up, when he’s going to sleep.” He further explained, “It’s just a bit of reassurance knowing that it’s okay when we can’t be here.” Dr. Shaz Wahid, the executive medical director at South Tyneside and Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust, commented that the upgraded facility was “much needed.” Dr. Wahid noted, “One baby in 10 in the UK needs additional medical care in the newborn period and one in a 100 requires intensive care.” The renovated unit is equipped to care for seventeen infants simultaneously. The accompanying accommodation unit is designed to offer families shared space, featuring bedrooms adjacent to the rooms where their babies receive care, alongside a quiet room and a nursing room.
