A commercial establishment, characterized as one of England’s most historic, has been listed for sale. Situated in Knaresborough’s Market Place, “Ye Oldest Chymist Shoppe in England” has served patrons since the early 18th Century. This Grade II listed building is believed to have commenced operations as an apothecary and pharmacy in 1720. Currently functioning as a gift shop and tea room, it is being offered for sale with an approximate guide price of £124,950. Carol Barden, who has owned the enterprise for more than two decades, expressed her desire for any prospective purchaser to maintain it “as it is”. She stated, “Everything original is still here, it’s just been fronted. The original drawers, the original cupboards, everything is actually still here, which is lovely. I don’t want to change anything about it, I really don’t.” Barden indicated her decision to sell stems from a desire for a more tranquil lifestyle and to embrace semi-retirement. “I will come in and have a look round,” she remarked, adding, “I’ll be sorry not to see the regular customers and doing the ordering, hiring and firing, I’ll miss all of that.” The upper level of the premises currently offers tea and cake, and Duncan, who manages the counter, conveyed his hope for its continuation. He commented, “It’s a meeting place for lots of locals and it’s got a good local clientele.” In its listing by Ernest Wilson, the establishment is characterized as possessing “one of the finest trading positions in the town”. Despite the shop’s designation implying it is England’s oldest chemist, its function as a pharmacy concluded in 1998. The longest continuously operating pharmacy in England currently is Reavley’s, situated in Burford, Oxfordshire, which has been in business since 1734.
