An England rugby athlete has received the freedom of the borough, acknowledging her professional achievements. Alex Matthews, who competed for Great Britain in rugby sevens at the 2020 Olympics, was one of six individuals and organisations granted this distinction by Surrey Heath Borough Council on Wednesday. The 31-year-old World Cup champion, a native of Camberley, has earned 72 test caps playing for England over the course of her career. Mayor Sarbie Kang stated: “The freedom of the borough is the highest civic recognition we can bestow and it is my great privilege to confer this honour.” The accolade was also presented to the local charity Camberley Care; Ken Clarke, treasurer of the Surrey Heath Local History Club; Maureen Hume, founder of Camberley Alzheimer’s Café; Karen Jackson, founder of Chloe’s and Sophie’s Special Ears Fund Charity; and Mary Keys, a former head teacher. Ms Kang commented: “Their impact on our borough is lasting and profound, reminding us all of the power of community and selfless service as we look toward a bright future together.”
