An English hockey player stated she is “proud” to be a member of the national squad participating in the Masters Hockey World Cup in New Zealand. Sabina Falcone-Healey has been a player for Chippenham Hockey Club in Wiltshire for nearly 30 years, making her the team’s longest-serving member. Currently, Ms. Falcone-Healey is representing the country alongside her teammates on the women’s over-45 squad in Auckland. “Our aim is to win and come back with gold,” Ms. Falcone-Healey remarked. The 47-year-old mentioned her decision to try out for the Masters team and her “surprising” selection. She elaborated, “I was feeling quite fit and kind of thought, let’s just try it. There’s no harm in trying. “I’m absolutely chuffed to bits with myself, and my family are as well,”. She further added that wearing the England jersey for the first time was an “emotional” experience. “You work hard for it, so I feel really proud.” Since her selection, Ms. Falcone-Healey reported that others have told her they feel inspired to also try out. The Hockey Masters teams are open to players aged over 35, with categories advancing in five-year increments up to the 75-80 age group. “You can continue playing if your body is willing and you want to, which is great,” Ms. Falcone-Healey said. She also expressed her intention to continue playing for as long as she is able. Ms. Falcone-Healey encouraged anyone considering playing the sport to do so, regardless of their age or ability. “It’s for everybody – whether you’re a beginner or whether you’re at the higher end – you will fit into a team somewhere,” she stated. The Masters Hockey World Cup competition commenced on 7 November and is scheduled to conclude on 16 November.
