England international fly-half Marcus Smith has committed his future to Harlequins by signing a new contract that will keep him with the club until at least 2028. He has played 166 matches for Harlequins since his debut in 2017. The 25-year-old, who possesses 41 international caps and has accumulated 284 points for England, featured as a starter in all four autumn internationals. Smith was also a member of the Harlequins squad that secured the Premiership title in the 2020-21 season. Speaking to the Harlequins website, Smith stated, “I love the club it’s given me and my family a lot over the years and I’m looking forward to the future here.” He further added, “Every time I come in to the training ground, I’m excited about the future of the club because I can see the level of talent we have in the building.” Smith also commented, “We’ve always prided ourselves on our homegrown talent, and I think everyone is going to see more of that in seasons to come.” Smith’s commitment marks him as the tenth player to extend their tenure with the Twickenham-based club within the past month. Other players who have done so include vice-captain Cadan Murley and flanker Will Evans. The specific durations of these other new agreements have not been disclosed by the club. Born in the Philippines, Smith’s initial appearance for Harlequins occurred against London Irish at Twickenham in September 2017. He was a member of the Harlequins squad that clinched the Premiership title in 2020-21. During his debut season, he accumulated 199 points across 28 matches, and his total points for the club now stand at 1,505. Smith’s full England Test debut took place against USA in July 2021. He was also a member of the squad that secured a third-place finish at the 2023 Rugby World Cup, where he was frequently chosen to play at full-back. In the recent autumn internationals, he was Steve Borthwick’s preferred fly-half, starting all four fixtures against New Zealand, Australia, South Africa, and Japan, ahead of Sale’s George Ford. Smith returned to action for Harlequins in Friday’s European Champions Cup match, which resulted in a defeat by Racing 92. He further commented, “Every time I play at The Stoop, I feel the love from the fans and their support for not only myself, but the team – I think they provide the best support this league has to offer.” He concluded, “Personally, and collectively, we are all so grateful for them.” Smith also shared, “I’ve come through the academy and still play with a lot of my best mates – hopefully we can achieve more of our dreams together.” Harlequins currently hold the seventh position in the Premiership table, having secured three victories from their initial seven matches. Smith holds 41 international caps for England. According to BBC Sport rugby union news reporter Mike Henson, Marcus Smith had previously signed a contract extension with Harlequins as recently as July 2023. Henson noted that this earlier agreement was a shorter-term arrangement, which successfully fended off interest from French club Racing 92. At that time, Smith, whose position in coach Steve Borthwick’s selection hierarchy was diminishing, cited remaining in the Premiership to contend for his England spot as a primary driver. Subsequently, Racing proceeded to sign Owen Farrell, which, Henson suggests, made Smith’s path back into the Test team somewhat less complicated. Following a succession of outstanding attacking displays this autumn, Smith has solidified his position as England’s primary fly-half and is, arguably, the Premiership’s most significant crowd-attracting talent. Henson concluded that Smith’s adventurous playing style aligns perfectly with Harlequins’ dedication to running rugby. While there was reported interest from the expansive, high-performing Bristol club, Harlequins will be pleased to enhance his EPS contract, securing him with an agreement that extends past the upcoming Rugby World Cup in Australia in 2027.
