England captain Heather Knight, recognized as one of the nation’s most accomplished women cricketers, has finalized an agreement to play for Somerset starting in the 2025 season. The 33-year-old, who led England to a 2017 World Cup victory, previously captained Western Storm, securing two Super League titles. She represented Western Storm, a team that encompassed Somerset and neighboring Gloucestershire since 2016, and her move to Somerset comes after a restructuring of the domestic women’s cricket system. Earlier in April, Knight was also named a cricket advisor to Somerset’s board. Knight’s international career for England includes 143 One Day Internationals, 124 T20 internationals, and 12 Test matches, where she has accumulated over 6,800 runs. She has held the captaincy for England since 2016 and has also participated in overseas leagues with Royal Challengers Bangalore and Sydney Thunder. Expressing her enthusiasm for the new role, Knight, who started her playing career in Plymouth and progressed through the Devon pathway, stated: “Somerset is a club that holds a special place in my heart, so I’m incredibly excited about this opportunity.” She added: “The South West has played an integral role in my journey and it’s a privilege to be able to represent the region that means so much to me.” Knight further commented on the team’s potential: “We have a genuine opportunity to create something special. This is the first Somerset women’s team of the professional era, and we have a duty to those who have gone before and laid the foundations to make sure that we are a team that competes on the field and inspires young people across the region.” Somerset is among eight counties granted Tier 1 status by the ECB for the 2025 season, a move designed to replace the regional teams that previously participated in the Charlotte Edwards Cup and Rachael Heyhoe Flint Trophy. Knight will be joining fellow England all-rounders Charlie Dean and Danielle Gibson, who have also been confirmed as signings for the upcoming year. Trevor Griffin, Somerset’s head coach, expressed his satisfaction, stating: “Heather is a player I’ve worked with for many years, and I’m delighted she will be playing for Somerset when her England commitments allow.” He further commented on her qualities: “She is a true professional who impacts games both on and off the pitch and is an invaluable addition to any side.” Griffin concluded: “I’m sure our supporters will be looking forward to seeing Heather in a Somerset shirt and winning games of cricket for us.”
