The Environment Agency (EA) has imposed tens of thousands of pounds in fines on boat owners operating unregistered vessels on the River Thames, as its enforcement campaign extends into December. An additional 26 boat owners, who reportedly disregarded prior warnings, received these penalties at Staines Magistrates Court. This action follows earlier enforcement measures implemented during the autumn, which resulted in fines for 14 other owners, as reported by the Local Democracy Reporting Service. Consequently, the total number of individuals fined after spot checks conducted at Penton Hook Marina, located near Staines, now stands at 40. Furthermore, other initiatives undertaken throughout the autumn and winter periods have resulted in unregistered boats being removed from the river close to Hampton Court and subsequently scrapped. Colin Chiverton, who serves as the manager for the EA in Surrey, stated: “If you have an unregistered boat on the Thames, you should know that our enforcement teams remain out all winter patrolling the river.” He added: “With our ongoing crackdown this Christmas we urge all Thames boaters to ensure they register their vessels ahead of the new year deadline.” The EA confirmed that those who received fines had been provided with “ample warning.” Boat registrations are comparable to excise duties for automobiles, with fees determined by the craft’s length and width. These enforcement actions are part of a broader strategy by the EA along the Thames, which includes several high-profile operations to relocate illegal boats moored in the vicinity of Hampton Court Palace.
