An endangered short-eared owl, recognized as significant for its species’ survival, has passed away despite the efforts of veterinary staff to keep her alive. The owl, named “Shortie,” was discovered in Stourbridge, West Midlands, on Sunday and received treatment at Evolution Exotics, located in Cleobury Mortimer, Shropshire. The clinic had expressed hope for her recovery, aiming for either her release back into the wild or her inclusion in a breeding program. According to Vet Marie Kubiak, “Shortie” showed initial signs of improvement after enduring extensive surgery, but ultimately lacked the necessary reserves to complete her recovery process. This bird of prey is categorized with an amber risk status in conservation records, and the clinic noted it had no prior experience operating on an owl of “Shortie’s” kind. Following her discovery, a member of the public transported the bird to The Falconry Centre in nearby Hagley, from where she was subsequently moved to Evolution Exotics. Diagnostic tests revealed the owl sustained four fractures across two bones and a puncture wound to her left eye. Upon her transfer to a recovery cage, the clinic reported that she experienced “a very sudden decline.” The clinic stated that she “sadly just didn’t have enough reserves left to get her through this challenging stage.” The clinic characterized her death as “devastating news.” Post navigation Coastal Cliff Blaze Caused by Fireworks Herefordshire Implements Ash Tree Removal and Replacement Program to Combat Dieback
