Aston Villa’s primary goalkeeper, Emiliano Martinez, was honored as the world’s top goalkeeper for a second consecutive year at the Ballon d’Or awards ceremony held on Monday. The 32-year-old has been recognized for another exceptional year playing for both his club and national team, becoming the first goalkeeper to secure the Yashin Trophy twice. Martinez achieved five clean sheets in six matches for Argentina in July, as the team successfully defended their Copa America title, earning him the Golden Glove award. This accomplishment followed a successful period with Villa, during which he also recorded 15 clean sheets across all competitions, contributing to their qualification for the Champions League. “Back-to-back is something I never expected,” Martinez stated. “I’m just proud to be here.” He added, “All thanks to my family and friends.” Unai Simon of Athletic Bilbao placed second to Martinez, while Andriy Lunin from Real Madrid finished third. In addition to receiving the goalkeeping award, Martinez also secured the 18th position in the overall 2024 Ballon d’Or standings. Martinez joined Villa from Arsenal in 2020 for £17m and has accumulated 171 appearances for the club to date. Villa posted on X, external: “Best in the world … again.”
