A substantial blaze erupted within an industrial estate situated in Leicester. The Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service (LFRS) received an alert regarding the incident at a bakery on Cobden Street at 11:52 GMT on Thursday. Entry to the street has been restricted as five fire appliances, among them an aerial ladder platform, are deployed to combat the flames. The fire service issued guidance recommending that local residents keep all windows and doors shut. Dean Pidcock, who serves as the group manager of operational response at LFRS, indicated that the incident was being scaled back around 14:30, but he noted that crews were “still dealing with a very serious fire which is very hard to reach”. He further stated: “We’re taking precautions that the corrugated roofing might be asbestos but it’s not confirmed.” Mr. Pidcock confirmed that an inquiry into the cause of the fire would be conducted. A representative for the Environment Agency commented: “We are liaising with LFRS regarding the fire and concerns that water runoff could enter nearby drainage systems and watercourses and cause pollution.” The spokesperson added: “Currently we are providing advice and guidance on management of this risk remotely. This is due to the risk of asbestos in the immediate area.” Leicestershire Police confirmed its involvement in supporting the fire service at the scene and reported that several road closures had been implemented across Freehold Street, Birstall Street, and Cobden Street.
