Emergency Drill Conducted at Nuclear Facility

An emergency simulation drill is currently underway at a nuclear facility. Residents residing near the Sellafield nuclear reprocessing plant in Cumbria might hear the facility’s siren and could receive text, email, and phone alerts, provided they have registered for these notifications. Should the siren activate, the gates will be secured, and the site will enter a lockdown state. Comprehensive safety drills are mandated to occur at Sellafield a minimum of annually and are monitored by the Office for Nuclear Regulation (ONR). This particular drill is designated as a “daylight exercise,” though specific timings or the simulated scenario are not disclosed beforehand. A spokesperson for Sellafield stated that all personnel on site are anticipated to “respond appropriately and follow instructions.” Following the completion of the exercise, ONR inspectors will offer feedback and identify key learning points.
