Sir Elton John has stated that he has been unable to complete his upcoming album due to persistent difficulties with his vision, stemming from an infection he contracted in July. He informed ABC’s Good Morning America that he has lacked sight in his right eye for the past four months, and his left eye is “not the greatest.” The singer explained, “I can do something like this [interview] but going into the studio and recording, I don’t know, because I can’t see a lyric for start.” He further commented, “It’s never fortunate for anything like this to happen, and it kind of floored me and I can’t see anything, I can’t read anything, I can’t watch anything.” When questioned about the album’s progress, the pop star indicated he was unsure, noting that “it’s been a while since I’ve done anything” and that he is “kind of stuck at the moment.” Sir Elton mentioned he is undergoing treatment, expressing that “there’s hope and encouragement that it will be OK.” He elaborated, “At the moment, that’s really what we’re concentrating on.” During the Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame ceremony in November 2023, Sir Elton had announced that he had “just finished” a new album in collaboration with lyricist Bernie Taupin. He described it then as “absolutely wonderful and it’s full of youth and full of vitality.” Sir Elton’s most recent studio album featuring new material was released in 2016. Nevertheless, his interview on Good Morning America implies that the completion of his next album remains distant. These remarks follow by nearly three months his previous disclosure to fans that a “severe” infection had resulted in him having “only limited vision” in one eye. Despite these challenges, he has continued to make several public appearances. He attended the premieres of his new documentary Never Too Late in Toronto and London. In October, he performed his hit duet Cold Heart with Dua Lipa on stage at her concert at the Royal Albert Hall. Earlier this month, he was present at the Broadway opening of his musical Tammy Faye, and on Friday, he introduced a song from another new stage show, The Devil Wears Prada, at the Royal Variety Performance in London.
