Eleven Bodies Discovered in Vehicle in Southern Mexican City

Officials have reported the discovery of the remains of 11 individuals, including two children, inside a vehicle in a southern Mexican city plagued by violence. This somber finding took place in Chilpancingo, a city located in Guerrero state, whose mayor was decapitated last month just days after beginning his term. The state’s attorney general stated that the victims’ identities are currently unknown, and the incident is being investigated as a homicide. Law enforcement was dispatched to the site after an abandoned pick-up truck was reported to authorities on Wednesday night. The vehicle containing the bodies was discovered on a highway leading to Acapulco. Acapulco, which served as a destination for the wealthy and renowned in the 1950s and 1960s, has since evolved into a hub for drug-trafficking, characterized by a high murder rate. Guerrero is recognized as one of Mexico’s most violent states, largely due to its geographical position on Pacific coast smuggling routes. Last year, the state documented 1,890 murders. Chilpancingo, a city home to approximately 280,000 inhabitants, has consistently been a focal point for territorial disputes between two drug gangs, the Ardillos and the Tlacos. A minimum of six candidates for public office were killed in the state in the period preceding Mexico’s 2 June elections. Last month, Alejandro Arcos, the mayor of Chilpancingo, was discovered decapitated less than a week after assuming his duties. Since 2006, when the government deployed the army to combat drug trafficking, more than 450,000 people have been murdered and tens of thousands have gone missing across Mexico. Mexico’s new president, Claudia Sheinbaum, has designated addressing violent crime as a priority.
