Scott Seare, a resident of Leicester, expressed a wish that activating his Christmas lights would not result in a power outage. He was reminded of a moment in National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation where an abundance of lights led to a widespread power failure. Happily for Mr Seare, the activation of his extensive light arrangement, supporting the LOROS hospice, proceeded smoothly. The previous year’s festive display generated £1,000 for the charitable organization, and in 2024, he aims to surpass this amount. He stated, ““[This year] we were having people along the road shouting Merry Christmas and beeping their horns,” adding that “People passing by said it just looks absolutely amazing.”” For several years, Mr Seare has utilized his light display to collect donations for the hospice. The illumination of the lights occurred on 1 December, though Mr Seare indicated that preparations commenced prior to Halloween, specifically in late-September. Mr Seare mentioned that he opted for low-energy lightbulbs this year, attributing the choice to increased utility costs. He further commented, ““For about five hours, it’s about £6, maybe £7, so it’s not really a lot, but it’s on every day so the bills don’t go away.” The display features various festive lights adorning his residence, along with an inflatable Santa Claus and an inflatable Christmas tree. Debbie Thrussel, the fundraising co-ordinator at LOROS, conveyed that the organization was “so grateful” given the financial strain on the hospice. She also remarked, “”The house looks beautiful and brings so much joy,”” She concluded, “”Things like this don’t happen overnight, and take months of planning.”” Mr Seare stated that ““absolutely anybody”” is invited to view the lights, which will remain illuminated until 24 December, but cautioned visitors against stepping on the grass due to the presence of power cables. He quipped, ““I don’t think football Santa with an England top would like an electricity explosion before Christmas,”” Additionally, a private viewing session was arranged to accommodate individuals with disabilities.
