Eighteen individuals have faced court proceedings concerning demonstrations held in Cardiff during June, which were in opposition to the conflict in Gaza. The group, comprising 10 women and eight men, stands accused of various offences, including assaulting an emergency worker, engaging in ‘locking on’ to a person to cause significant disruption to South Wales Police, obstructing an officer, wilfully obstructing the highway, and public order violations. All 18 defendants, whose registered addresses span south Wales, Cornwall, and Hertfordshire, have entered pleas of not guilty to the charges and have been released on unconditional bail. Their next court appearance at Cardiff Magistrates Court is scheduled for the New Year. South Wales Police reported that sixteen arrests were carried out following a protest that occurred near the front desk area of Cardiff Bay police station on 4 June. Authorities further stated in June that these arrests transpired hours after a separate individual was apprehended at an earlier demonstration in central Cardiff, which involved approximately 50 to 60 participants. The conflict commenced on 7 October 2023, with an unprecedented assault on southern Israel by Hamas-led gunmen, an event that resulted in the deaths of approximately 1,200 individuals and the taking of 251 hostages. The Hamas-run health ministry asserts that the death toll for Palestinians in Gaza has exceeded 45,000 over the 14-month duration of the war between Israel and Hamas.
