In Edinburgh, occupants of an apartment building recounted their escape from a fire by leaping from a balcony onto a mattress. A total of ten individuals were hospitalized following a fire that erupted in a ground-floor unit on Niddrie Mill Crescent around 18:30 on Wednesday. Andrew Bond, 36, stated that he, his partner, and his cousin were compelled to jump from the second floor when “thick black smoke” inundated the stairwell. Police Scotland confirmed an investigation into the fire’s origin is underway. All ten individuals admitted to the hospital were subsequently discharged following examinations. Speaking to BBC Scotland News, Mr. Bond revealed he initially disregarded a fire alarm, believing it to be caused by a neighbor’s cooking. However, he described his “lungs were starting to close up” upon encountering smoke in the stairwell. Mr. Bond then alerted his partner and cousin, and they proceeded to the balcony, where they observed a neighbor had positioned a mattress in the garden below. He recounted: “We tried everything to get out the front way, but the smoke was too thick. “My eyes were burning through the smoke. We just had to jump, we had no choice.“I just basically vaulted straight over the balcony, landed on the mattress, just to get to safety.” Emergency services, including fire and ambulance crews, arrived shortly thereafter and stayed on scene until 22:00. Mr. Bond and multiple neighbors were transported to Edinburgh Royal Infirmary as a precautionary measure. Upon returning to the site on Thursday morning, residents discovered their residences blackened and coated in a substantial layer of ash. John Hill, a neighbor, commented that he had “never seen anything like it” in his five decades residing in the building. He stated: “If you were to ask me how scary that was out of 100, I would say 101.“The whole place was covered in smoke. I tried to get down the stairs, but I fell on the stairs and I just thought ‘this is it’.“When I went back in this morning, everything was just all black and manky”. Police Scotland confirmed that officers remained present at the location. A spokesperson further noted: “Inquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances.”
