A new development featuring 3,000 homes in west Edinburgh has received unanimous approval from the city council. This upcoming community, known as Edinburgh Elements, is slated for construction on a 29-hectare disused brownfield site that previously functioned as a runway for Edinburgh Airport. The project is part of a larger £1bn development for the city and will encompass a variety of one, two, and three-bedroom residences, alongside office spaces, retail outlets, a school, active travel routes, and a green urban park. The decision was made on Wednesday by councillors serving on the City of Edinburgh Council’s development management sub-committee, who stated that it “takes traditional Edinburgh into the 21st century.” Proposals for the development, situated near Cammo, East Craigs, and South Gyle, were submitted in February. This occurred just a few months after the local authority became the first city council in Scotland to declare a “housing emergency.” According to Crosswind Development, the company behind these plans, more than 1,000 of the properties will be designated as affordable housing, with the aim of alleviating housing pressure in the city. This approval follows the recent endorsement of the adjacent West Town development, which is anticipated to deliver 7,000 homes on a neighbouring site. Combined, these two developments are projected to result in the construction of 10,000 new homes. Developers have indicated that the new homes will target zero household carbon dioxide emissions, contributing to Edinburgh’s environmental objectives. Furthermore, the site will incorporate over 9km (five miles) of dedicated walking and cycling routes to encourage active travel and reduce the number of vehicles in the area. John Watson, chief executive of Crosswind Developments, commented: “This approval marks a critical moment for west Edinburgh, and the city more widely, allowing us all to take the next step towards delivering new homes the city so desperately needs.” He further noted that in addition to providing 3,000 new homes, the site will also offer crucial transport links, green spaces, and a primary school, which will help ensure these significant housing developments evolve into thriving communities. The decision signifies the commencement of a new phase, which will see the plans for the Elements site materialize, thereby transforming Edinburgh and creating new residences for its inhabitants.
