Singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran made an unannounced appearance at a music industry careers event designed for schoolchildren. Over 200 high school students from Ipswich were present at the event, which highlighted various career paths, held at The Baths venue in the town on Tuesday. The event was organized by Brighten The Corners, an Ipswich-based education and music promoter known for orchestrating an annual multi-venue music festival within the town. Prior to Sheeran’s unexpected arrival, attendees enjoyed performances by three emerging artists from Suffolk. These included rapper Ryski, the rock band AfterDrive, and the indie-pop sibling duo Esme Emerson, all of whom also engaged with the audience by answering questions. Esme Emerson, whose musical journey began at Rock Schools operated by the Brighten The Corners team and who recently toured as a supporting act for Keane, stated: “It was such a joy to be part of this event.” They added, “It’s so important that young people have access to music and the arts. Also, we love Ed.” According to Brighten The Corners, students were afforded an opportunity to explore various roles within the music and live events sectors, such as sound engineering, management, and marketing. Joe Bailey, the chief executive, commented: “We work within one of the most creative and dynamic industries in the UK and hope this event will be the catalyst for future careers.” In the early stages of his own musical career, Sheeran, now 33, who hails from Framlingham in Suffolk, frequently performed as a busker in Ipswich and played at local establishments like The Swan and Steamboat Tavern, often to very small crowds.
