Singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran made an unexpected appearance for choristers practicing their Christmas carol services during the official opening of their new music school. The St Mary-le-Tower choir in Ipswich comprises nearly 40 young individuals. The choir recently inaugurated its Song School, situated across from the church on Tower Street, within a facility that also functions as a well-being and community center, shared with Citizens Advice. According to the Reverend Tom Mumford, the church’s vicar, “He was amazing with our young choristers, listening to them, asking them questions.” Mr. Mumford, who has been acquainted with Sheeran since their teenage years, further stated, “He’s an incredible advocate for the town, and for young people getting into singing.” Sheeran, a resident near Framlingham, located north of Ipswich, arrived wearing his Ipswich Town puffa jacket and responded to “plenty of questions about” the football club, for which he is a prominent supporter and shareholder. The choir, previously featured on Classic FM and having performed live on the BBC, had exceeded the capacity of its former location in a different church building. A bequest from a parishioner allowed St Mary-le-Tower to refurbish and restore a section of Tower House, which now serves as the Song School’s premises. Mr. Mumford expressed, “My hope is that [Sheeran’s] commitment and work will encourage many more young people to explore singing, and what better place in Ipswich to do that than at Ipswich Minster.” St Mary-le-Tower, a Grade II* listed building with medieval origins and refurbished in the 19th Century, is scheduled to be designated a minster in January. This designation, coinciding with the town’s 825th anniversary, acknowledges the church as a “church of key significance to the town,” as stated by the Church of England.
