A shopping centre located in Staffordshire is now slated for acquisition by a local council, following the collapse of a previous sale agreement earlier this year. Leaders at East Staffordshire Borough Council have resolved to employ compulsory purchase powers to secure The Maltings, situated in Uttoxeter, with the aim of redeveloping the site. The council anticipates that a planning application will be submitted early in the new year, subsequent to a consultation process with residents regarding the site’s future. A final design will be formulated by architects, and planning consultants are scheduled for appointment in the coming weeks, as stated by the authority. The owner, M J Barrett Group, withdrew from the sale of the site in September, a fortnight before its scheduled completion. This decision was made in favor of an alternative bidder, who, according to the group, intended to refurbish the centre rather than redevelop it. East Staffordshire Borough Council affirmed its complete dedication to the comprehensive regeneration of the retail premises and has allocated over £1m for the undertaking. However, a report presented to council leaders warns that the authority might not possess sufficient funds once the cost of the compulsory purchase is incorporated, which could mean that development work at the site may need to proceed in stages.
