Ealing, a Championship high-flying team, defeated Premiership side Saracens with a score of 29-19 in the initial round of the Premiership Rugby Cup. Reuben Bird-Tulloch contributed two tries to Ealing’s victory. The current second-tier champions, who were prevented from advancing to the top division last season because their ground did not meet the league’s size criteria, registered five tries against a significantly altered Saracens lineup. Rob Farrar scored in the opening minute, followed shortly by Reuben Bird-Tulloch, giving Ealing a 12-0 advantage within six minutes. Ealing further extended their lead to 24-0 with Bird-Tulloch’s second try and a penalty try, during which Saracens’ Phil Brantingham and Toby Knight were sent to the sin bin. Brandon Jackson-Richards scored a try for Sarries just prior to half-time. However, Angus Kernohan secured Ealing’s fifth try four minutes into the second half, pushing their lead to an insurmountable 29-5. Late tries from Harry Wilson and a second for Jackson-Richards helped make the score more respectable for Saracens, the Premiership’s fourth-placed team. Ealing, currently second in the Championship, maintained their strong performance in the tournament. They were the sole second-tier team to advance from the group stages last season and are currently tied with Harlequins at the top of Pool C. Ealing’s victory marked the day’s sole upset, as Premiership teams prevailed over their second-tier adversaries in the five other matches played. Gloucester experienced the most challenging afternoon, securing a 31-26 win against nearby Hartpury. The Cherry and Whites held a 26-14 lead at half-time, having already earned a four-try bonus point. A penalty try with nine minutes remaining offered Hartpury a glimmer of hope, especially after Gloucester’s Freddie Clarke and Josh Hathaway were sin-binned, but the Championship side ultimately failed to score a potential winning try. Gloucester now shares the top spot in Pool E with Exeter. Harlequins also triumphed against their close neighbours, defeating London Scottish 35-22 at the Richmond Athletic Ground, with Hayden Hyde scoring two tries. Newcastle secured a bonus point in Pool A following their 33-12 victory over Caldy in the Wirral. Meanwhile, Bristol dominated Bedford with a 67-19 win at Ashton Gate in their Pool D fixture. Kalaveti Ravouvou and Harry Thacker each contributed two tries as the Bears accumulated seven tries in the first half and an additional four after the interval. However, Bath achieved the most significant victory of the day, overwhelming Ampthill 73-0 at Dillingham Park. Kepu Tuipulotu recorded a hat-trick in the first half, while Ruaridh McConnochie and Ethan Staddon each scored two tries, contributing to the Premiership side’s total of 11 tries. This result placed Bath at the top of Pool D, surpassing Bristol on points difference, as the initial round of matches concluded.
