Duncan Scott of Great Britain triumphed over France’s Leon Marchand, a multiple world and Olympic champion, in the men’s 200m freestyle event. This victory took place on the concluding day of the short course World Cup in Singapore, where Marchand, 22, secured second place. Scott, 27, who had placed second to Marchand in the 200m medley on Friday, claimed his second title of the competition, having also won the men’s 400m freestyle with a British record. On Saturday, he completed the 200m freestyle in one minute 39.83 seconds, finishing 1.08 seconds ahead of Marchand, with Pan Zhanle of China taking third position. The outcomes of Scott’s races in the third and concluding event of the series propelled him to third position in the men’s overall standings. Meanwhile, Marchand, a four-time gold medalist at the Paris Olympics this summer, accumulated sufficient points to be named the men’s overall champion. Noe Ponti of Switzerland secured second place overall, finishing his championships with a win in the men’s 50m butterfly. In the women’s competition, America’s Kate Douglass, 22, claimed the overall title after her victory in the 100m freestyle during Saturday’s finale. Her compatriot, Regan Smith, also 22, finished second overall, having won the women’s 200m backstroke in a new world record time of 1:58.83. Smith also set a new personal world record in the 100m backstroke earlier in the event.
