A motorist responsible for a deadly collision had previously recorded himself driving at high speed on a motorway with his feet extended outside the car window. Caleb Mansfield-Marr, from Blackburn, was operating his vehicle at 64mph – more than twice the legal speed limit – when he collided with another car in Bredbury, Greater Manchester, on August 7, 2023. Jack Howe, 76, a passenger in the other vehicle, succumbed to his injuries the subsequent month. His 74-year-old wife, who was driving, also sustained severe injuries. Mansfield-Marr, aged 22, pleaded guilty to causing death by dangerous driving at Manchester Crown Court and received a 12-year prison sentence. Investigators discovered video footage on Mansfield-Marr’s mobile phone depicting him engaging in hazardous driving on multiple occasions. Sgt Louise Warhurst of Greater Manchester Police stated: “In one of the videos we found, Mansfield-Marr was driving at speeds exceeding 80 mph on a motorway with his feet crossed and resting out of the window while using cruise control.” At the time of the fatal incident, Mansfield-Marr was disqualified from driving, lacked a valid licence, and was uninsured, having previously been cited for speeding and failing to stop after a collision, according to the police force. Sgt Warhurst further remarked: “This is a dangerous man who believes the rules and laws that all other road users abide by daily do not apply to him.” Mr. Howe’s widow, whose identity has not been disclosed, characterized him as “my best friend.” In a written statement, she conveyed: “The morning of 25 September 2023 changed my life forever – I became a widow.” She continued: “My lovely, kind and caring husband of 50 years had passed away. “No more companionship, conversations, laughs or celebrations to share together.”I am healing from my injuries, but nothing can heal my loss of losing Jack.”
