A motorist has received a 28-month prison sentence for his involvement in a collision that resulted in severe injuries to a pedestrian in her sixties. Darwood Khan, aged 23, residing at Berkeley Terrace in Leeds, was operating a Volkswagen Golf on Searjeant Street in Peterborough when law enforcement signaled for him to pull over. Khan disregarded this directive, proceeded on the incorrect side of the road, and compelled a Peugeot vehicle onto the sidewalk and through a residential front garden. During proceedings at Cambridge Crown Court on Friday, he pleaded guilty to the charge of causing serious injury by dangerous driving and was issued a driving disqualification for a period of three years and two months. Authorities stated that as Khan accelerated away from officers, he narrowly averted a crash with a silver Mercedes and a second Volkswagen at an intersection. He maintained an excessive speed, disregarded a give way sign, and traversed an intersection without applying brakes or reducing his pace. Khan then proceeded along Gladstone Street, nearing Searjeant Street once more, where he utilized the wrong lane at the junction and crashed into a Peugeot 307. Both he and an additional male occupant exited the vehicle and fled from law enforcement, though Khan was apprehended following a short pursuit. The woman, who is in her sixties, was transported to a hospital for treatment of several fractures to her right leg. Sgt Ian Leeson stated: “Khan showed a complete disregard for the safety of others as he drove dangerously in a busy area full of other vehicles and pedestrians.” Sgt Leeson further remarked that despite the victim’s serious and long-lasting injuries, Khan’s “totally irresponsible behaviour” could have readily resulted in a fatality on that day.
