A driver has been incarcerated after 30kg (66lb) of cannabis was discovered in the rear of a lorry transporting chicken. Serghei Bacaianov, a 41-year-old Bulgarian national, was apprehended at the Port of Killingholme, Lincolnshire, on May 4, having arrived from the Hook of Holland. Bacaianov was subsequently charged with the importation of drugs and was initially scheduled to face trial. However, he received a sentence of two years and six months at Grimsby Crown Court on October 2, after altering his plea to guilty. The National Crime Agency reported that the illicit substances had been hidden within a secret compartment in the lorry. A spokesperson also added that Bacaianov’s arrest “was made as part of an investigation into a suspected crime network based in Northern Ireland.”
