A motorist has received a prison sentence for causing the fatality of a teenage friend, who was a passenger in the vehicle at the time of a collision. Jack Tomlinson, aged 21 and from Scarborough, exceeded the legal limits for both alcohol and cannabis consumption when his vehicle struck a tree within the North York Moors National Park on August 13, 2021. Harry Coopland, 18, who was traveling in the car with Tomlinson, sustained severe head injuries and passed away in hospital two days subsequent to the incident. Tomlinson confessed to causing death by driving and received a sentence of three years and nine months imprisonment at York Crown Court on Thursday. During the court proceedings, it was revealed that Tomlinson, residing at Farside Road in West Ayton, had consumed alcohol with friends at a pub prior to making the decision to retrieve his car and drive towards Dalby Forest. Mr. Coopland was among four passengers inside the red Citroen, which North Yorkshire Police reported was observed being driven “erratically and aggressively.” Subsequently, the vehicle departed the roadway at Langdale End and collided near St Athanasius Monastery. Mr. Coopland lost his life in the collision, and three additional passengers sustained injuries. A statement presented in court by Mr. Coopland’s family characterized him as “a shining beacon of life, with a tremendous sense of humour”. “He was a loving member of our family with the kindest heart and to be with him was an absolute joy.“We mourn for Harry and the life that he could have and should have had, the wonderful future that lay in front of him and we mourn for our family, for the gaping abyss that is now part of our life and forever with us.” A 16-year-old female passenger in the vehicle suffered the loss of her hand due to the impact of the collision. Police reported that an 18-year-old male sustained three spinal fractures, and a 15-year-old girl incurred a facial injury. A police spokesperson stated, “Harry had his whole life ahead of him but it has been needlessly taken from him, and his family’s life has changed forever.” “It is a stark reminder of the dangers and catastrophic consequences of drinking, taking drugs and getting behind the wheel.”
