Steve Mahon, a motorist who was apprehended by members of the public after operating a vehicle erratically under the influence of alcohol, has confessed to the charge in court. According to Staffordshire Police, a breath test conducted at the location in Stoke-on-Trent indicated that Mahon, 44, residing in the city’s Hanley district, had an alcohol level five times exceeding the legal limit for driving. The police force stated that concerned members of the public “stopped him at the scene until we got there, pulling the keys out of the ignition so he couldn’t carry on driving.” Mahon entered a guilty plea at North Staffordshire Justice Centre to the offense of operating a motor vehicle with an alcohol level surpassing the legal threshold. PC Andrew Heard, from the force’s Road Crime Team, commented: “I’d like to thank the members of the public who recognised the danger of Mahon’s actions and managed to stop him from causing harm to himself and other road users.” Mahon committed the offense on 22 October, driving a Suzuki Swift on Potteries Way in Hanley, and admitted guilt the subsequent day. His sentencing is scheduled for 27 January. Authorities reported that Mahon’s breath sample at the scene registered 180 micrograms of alcohol per 100 millilitres. The permissible limit is 35 micrograms of alcohol. Police further stated that a subsequent test in custody showed a reading of 165 micrograms, which remained over four times the legal threshold.
