Patrice Lumumba’s gold-capped tooth, belonging to the Democratic Republic of Congo’s independence hero, remains secure and was not stolen, according to his daughter, who spoke to the BBC. This announcement brought reassurance to a nation that had been concerned that the sole remains of the country’s esteemed first prime minister might have been taken following the vandalism of his mausoleum in Kinshasa, the capital, on Monday evening. However, Juliana Lumumba stated that earlier worries regarding the site’s security had led the family to relocate the tooth to a safer place. The tooth had been repatriated to the Lumumba family by Belgium, the former colonial power, just two years prior, and was housed in a dedicated memorial structure. Lumumba was widely admired, both within his country and throughout Africa, due to his vocal opposition to colonialism, and he emerged as a symbol of pan-Africanism. He represented a beacon of transformation and optimism following the brutal period of Belgian rule, a time when millions of Congolese individuals perished or endured severe mistreatment. Nevertheless, he was removed from his position as prime minister mere months after the country gained independence from Belgium in 1960. In January 1961, at the age of 35, he was executed by a firing squad, a deed carried out with the implicit support of Belgium. Subsequently, his body was dissolved in acid; however, Gerard Soete, a Belgian police officer supervising the process, kept the tooth as a grim souvenir. The repatriation of Lumumba’s gold tooth in June 2022 sparked widespread celebration in DR Congo, and it was subsequently transported across the expansive nation, allowing citizens to honor his memory. The desecration of the mausoleum provoked widespread indignation, and when Culture Minister Yolande Elebe Mandembo declared on Tuesday that an inquiry had commenced, many anticipated the most severe outcome. Visual evidence circulated, depicting a shattered glass door that had been broken to gain entry to the chamber containing a visible coffin. Nevertheless, Ms. Lumumba aimed to calm public concerns on Wednesday, stating that her father’s tooth was not present at the site when the intrusion occurred. Despite this, she conveyed to the BBC her feelings of “anger and sadness” regarding the disrespect shown to her father’s grave. At 69 years old, she had dedicated years to advocating with Belgium for the tooth’s return. She stated, “Patrice Lumumba sacrificed himself for the sovereignty and independence of his country and the Congolese.” She added, “This is so unrepresentative of our culture, which respects the graves of our dearly departed.” According to local authorities, four individuals have been apprehended in connection with the desecration, though their identities have not been disclosed. Ms. Lumumba indicated that the Lumumba Foundation desired to assume responsibility for the mausoleum’s management due to security concerns and had been petitioning the government for this change.
