Following the approval of plans, a coastal town’s main thoroughfare is set to see the construction of numerous new residences. The Townsend family initially obtained outline permission from Somerset West and Taunton Council in September 2021 for the development of up to 60 residences situated south of Minehead’s A39 Hopcott Road. Subsequent revised plans, which incorporate the construction of 21 affordable homes on the property, have now received endorsement from Somerset Council. This council assumed the responsibilities of the former district council in April 2023. Additional specifics regarding this development are anticipated to be released in 2025. The location of the site is on the primary route that connects to Porlock and Exmoor National Park. Minehead Town Council had expressed opposition to these proposals, referencing a “lack of information” concerning drainage and asserting that residents would face challenges reaching the town centre without private vehicle access, as reported by the Local Democracy Reporting Service. A spokesperson articulated their concerns, stating: “Access to the A39 for vehicles, cyclists and pedestrians is a big issue. The site is a long way from any public transport.” They further added: “There is a lack of infrastructure and facilities in the town – there is now only one GP surgery in Minehead, and the nearby convenience store has closed.” Anthony Pick, a senior planning officer, affirmed that the location had been designated within the Local Plan as a “sustainable location.” He further commented: “No objections or concerns have been raised with regards to the capacity of the doctor’s surgery or school capacity to cater for the level of residents proposed.” The committee proceeded to endorse the plans, with the vote tally being seven in favor and three against.
