Thousands of individuals are anticipated to gather in Douglas, the Isle of Man’s capital, to witness the yearly Christmas lights switch-on event. Douglas is set to be the first location on the island to light up its streets for the festive season, with other towns across the island scheduled to follow within the next two weeks. Organized by the Douglas Council, activities are slated to commence at 17:30 GMT, culminating in the activation of over 77,000 Christmas lights throughout the city at 19:00. Douglas city manager Oliver Cheshire stated that the occasion “brings people together” and was also “great for the businesses” in the city centre. “With the festivities being on the doorstep of the shops it brings a lot of extra footfall in, which is great for both retail and hospitality businesses,” he further explained. In recent years, the event has drawn approximately 8,000 attendees, and organizers are projecting a similar turnout this year. Among the planned activities are a fairground on North Quay, a fire show on King Street, a snow garden on Castle Street, and an outdoor cinema located near the Villa Marina. Local brass bands will perform on Howard Street, and a designated performance area on Granville Street will also provide entertainment. Mr. Cheshire commented, “The big thing I always notice is you hear so many conversations going on for people who haven’t seen each other for years, so there is a massive community element to the event.” He also mentioned that no events are planned for Regent Street this year, a location that had previously been part of the lights switch-on. Complimentary parking will be available at the council’s Shaw’s Brow and Bottleneck car parks on Thursday evenings between 17:00 and 22:00 in the period leading up to Christmas.
