Police have initiated a double murder investigation in Manchester following the fatal stabbing of two men. Greater Manchester Police (GMP) reported that the men passed away “despite the best efforts” of emergency services, which had responded to an incident on Great Southern Street in the city’s Moss Side area around 05:00 GMT. According to a force spokesman, a 23-year-old man, thought to have known the victims, has been apprehended on suspicion of murder. He underwent a medical assessment and was subsequently detained under the Mental Health Act. Investigators, who have not yet disclosed information regarding the men who were stabbed, stated they are not seeking any additional individuals in relation to the homicides. During a press conference held in Manchester on Sunday afternoon, Chief Superintendent David Meeney remarked: “This morning two lives have been lost in our community and our thoughts go to their families, who have lost a loved one today.” He further stated: “We understand the shockwaves that this devastating news will have caused in the local community and further afield across Greater Manchester.” Chief Superintendent Meeney indicated that increased visible patrols were present in the vicinity “to reassure the community.” Inside a cordoned-off police area, a green bicycle was observed on the road beside a parked vehicle. Multiple officers were patrolling the site. A resident of the street, who requested anonymity, informed BBC News: “It’s very, very scary.” She added: “I worry about my kids because the place is not safe.” Separately, another resident commented: “I’ve never seen anything like this before round here – it’s a complete shock.” GMP issued a statement saying: “Despite the best efforts of first responders, two men [who] were treated at the scene for their injuries… have both sadly been pronounced dead.” The statement continued: “We thank the public for their co-operation and patience as there is a cordon in place on Great Southern Street and into the surrounding area.” It further urged: “We are asking the public to continue avoiding the area as there is a large emergency service presence while we establish the full circumstances of the incident.” Kate Green, the deputy mayor for Greater Manchester, extended her “deepest sympathies” to the victims’ families and expressed gratitude to emergency services personnel for their actions. She added: “I want to reassure the community, who will inevitably be shocked and concerned by the attack this morning, that GMP have increased visibility and are working hard with partners to ensure residents in Greater Manchester are safe now and in the future.” Reporting was also contributed by PA Media.
