President-elect Donald Trump has selected Elon Musk for a position focused on reducing government expenditures, aligning with his stated goal to “dismantle” bureaucracy upon his return to the White House next year. The technology magnate, Musk, known for advocating substantial spending reductions, has been chosen alongside biotech investor Vivek Ramaswamy to head a newly formed “Department of Government Efficiency” (Doge). This acronym references Dogecoin, Musk’s preferred cryptocurrency. Trump clarified that Musk and Ramaswamy would serve in an advisory capacity and that the Doge would not constitute an official government department. Concurrently, Trump announced another political newcomer, Fox News host and military veteran Pete Hegseth, as his choice for defence secretary. Musk had contributed millions to Donald Trump’s successful re-election campaign and was widely expected to receive a role in an administration that has, to date, recognized loyal supporters. During his campaign, Trump had previously detailed a plan for Musk’s involvement in government cost-cutting. Ramaswamy had earlier this year sought the Republican presidential nomination, competing against Trump, before withdrawing and subsequently endorsing him. Following his victory in last week’s election, Trump has been forming his senior team, with reports indicating that Marco Rubio, another former Republican rival, is being considered for the position of his new secretary of state. Trump appears poised to receive considerable backing for his legislative proposals in Congress, as Republicans secured the Senate and are nearing control of the House. The operational specifics of the Doge are yet to be determined. This organization does not currently exist and, upon its formation, is not anticipated to be an official department. Official government agencies typically require establishment through an act of Congress and usually employ thousands of personnel. During Tuesday night’s announcement, Trump confirmed that it will “provide advice and guidance from outside of government.” He stated that this initiative would assist his administration in its efforts to “dismantle government bureaucracy, slash excess regulations, cut wasteful expenditures and restructure federal agencies.” Trump indicated that Musk and Ramaswamy would collaborate with the White House and the Office of Management & Budget to address “massive waste and fraud” within the $6.5tn (£5.1tn) in annual government spending. Trump drew a comparison between the new initiative and the Manhattan Project, which was a highly classified World War Two program focused on developing the initial nuclear weapons. The president-elect specified that Musk and Ramaswamy are expected to conclude their work by 4 July (American Independence Day) 2026. The organization’s designation references Musk’s favored cryptocurrency, which was humorously named in 2013 after an internet meme. Dogecoin has seen a significant increase in value during the last week. Within the business sector, Musk is recognized for his stance against what he perceives as excessive government regulation and his strategy for cost reduction, particularly evident after his acquisition of Twitter, which he subsequently rebranded as X and where he dismissed thousands of employees. Musk, who is also the founder of SpaceX and Tesla, recently advocated for cuts of at least $2tn to US federal spending, representing nearly one-third of the government’s budget, though he did not provide specific details. Furthermore, he has suggested the elimination of hundreds of federal agencies, contending that many possess overlapping responsibilities. In a press release issued by Trump’s campaign, Musk commented: “This will send shockwaves through the system, and anyone involved in government waste, which is a lot of people.” Following the announcement, Musk posted on X: “Threat to democracy? Nope, threat to BUREAUCRACY!!!” Ramaswamy shared Trump’s announcement on social media, stating “we will not go gently.” He also declared his withdrawal from consideration for the Ohio Senate seat soon to be vacated by incoming US Vice-President JD Vance. Last year, during his presidential campaign, Ramaswamy had stated his intention to dismiss over 75% of the federal workforce and to shut down several significant agencies, such as the Department of Education, the FBI, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. Since Trump’s electoral win last week, Musk has reportedly spent each day with Trump at his Palm Beach, Florida estate. He was also involved in a recent phone conversation between Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. Trump revealed the appointments of Musk and Ramaswamy among numerous press releases issued on Tuesday evening, which also included the filling of several high-level national security roles. John Ratcliffe, designated to head the CIA, previously held the position of Trump’s director of national intelligence and supervised US intelligence agencies. South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem was confirmed as Trump’s nominee for secretary of homeland security. Meanwhile, the nomination of Fox News host Pete Hegseth to lead the Pentagon drew some scrutiny. A veteran of the Iraq war, he has limited experience in government but has been a prominent supporter of Trump for several years.
