Donald Trump, the US President-elect, has declared that Susan Summerall Wiles, who managed his campaign, will assume the role of his White House chief of staff upon his inauguration next year. In a released statement, Mr. Trump remarked that Wiles “just helped me achieve one of the greatest political victories in American history” and further described her as “tough, smart, innovative, and is universally admired and respected”. He further stated, “It is a well deserved honour to have Susie as the first-ever female chief of staff in United States history,” adding, “I have no doubt that she will make our country proud.” Wiles, aged 67, marks a historic appointment as the first woman to hold the position of White House chief of staff. The Trump transition team is presently engaged in selecting key personnel for the forthcoming Republican administration, encompassing the leaders of all 15 executive departments, including the secretaries of state and defence, effective from 20 January. During his victory speech this week, Mr. Trump characterized Wiles as “the ice maiden” while she was on stage behind him. The president-elect noted that she primarily operates “in the back”, yet she is recognized as one of the most formidable political strategists in the US. He further stated in his Thursday announcement, “Susie will continue to work tirelessly to Make America Great Again,” referencing his frequently used campaign slogan. An earlier profile published by Politico this year characterized Susie Wiles as a figure who is feared yet not widely recognized. Within a year of her entry into politics, Wiles became part of Ronald Reagan’s campaign leading up to his 1980 election. Subsequently, she played a pivotal role in reshaping the political landscape of Florida, her current state of residence. In 2010, she was instrumental in the successful gubernatorial campaign of Rick Scott, then a businessman with limited political background, making him Florida’s governor in merely seven months. Mr. Scott currently serves as a US senator. Wiles first encountered Trump during the 2015 Republican presidential primary and later served as co-chair for his Florida campaign. Trump ultimately secured the state against Hillary Clinton in 2016. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, who entrusted her with his own successful gubernatorial campaign two years subsequent, characterized Wiles as “the best in the business”. On the Trump campaign, Wiles collaborated with Chris LaCivita, an experienced figure in Republican politics with decades of involvement. Together, they assisted Trump in developing a successful presidential primary strategy. In her Politico profile, the 67-year-old grandmother, who is the daughter of the late American football player and broadcaster Pat Summerall, stated that her political roots are “traditional”. She remarked, “In my early career things like manners mattered and there was an expected level of decorum,” noting that the Republican party has changed considerably from what it was several decades prior. She continued, “And so I get it that the GOP of today is different,” referring to the Republican Party, also known as the Grand Old Party (GOP). She concluded, “There are changes we must live with in order to get done the things we’re trying to do.” The chief of staff is regarded as the president’s principal assistant, holding a vital position within every presidential administration. This role fundamentally functions as the White House manager, tasked with assembling the president’s staff. A chief directs the staff via the Executive Office of the President and supervises all daily functions and personnel actions. Furthermore, they offer counsel to presidents on matters of policy and are accountable for guiding and supervising policy formulation. Copyright 2024 BBC. All rights reserved.
