A dog, whose vision was lost following abandonment in snow, is currently seeking a permanent home. On November 19, subsequent to Derbyshire’s initial significant winter snowfall, a report concerning a stray dog was made to the Bolsover and North East Derbyshire district councils. Environmental health enforcement officers proceeded to a field in Sutton Scarsdale, situated close to Chesterfield, around 16:00 GMT, where they discovered a “frozen” dog in a collapsed state. The team initially held concerns that the dog had perished; however, following efforts to warm her and her subsequent transfer to a veterinary clinic, the dog, identified as Sky, ultimately recovered. A spokesperson for Bolsover District Council stated: “The dog was curled up, lying motionless in the snow, but the officer identified a very faint heartbeat and described the dog as ‘frozen’.” “After carrying the dog through a field of snow and ice in the darkness, the officer placed it in the back of the van and tried to warm it up using puppy pads and blankets.” Sky received a diagnosis of severe hypothermia, dehydration, and low blood sugar, and was provided care throughout the night. The one-year-old animal has experienced vision loss, though the council indicated that veterinary advice suggests a potential for recovery. Her microchip connected her to an address in Newcastle, according to the authority, but it is believed that these details are outdated and that she had been abandoned. Sky is presently housed in a council kennel, receiving care, with the hope of being rehomed. Karen Hanson, Bolsover’s chief executive, commended the officer’s commitment and expressed hope that Sky would be settled “in a loving and caring home very soon”.
